Vector painting and illustration suite
Creature House Expression first caught my attention about two years ago. It promised something fairly dramatic: a combination of vector illustration and raster paint features integrated seamlessly into one application. Sounds good. But how well does this concept hold up in practical terms? With the new version 3.0, surprisingly well.
The Pen Mode parameter
We continue our romp through the Synthetik Studio Artist paint synthesizer this week with a look at two parameter sets new in Studio Artist 2.0: Pen Mode. Studio Artist, of course, is a Mac-based paint, rotoscoping and animation tool that I can't seem to stop raving about. The paint Synthesizer is this program's core painting and rendering engine, which includes so many options that nobody really knows what they all do. But we'll continue to try to clear up some of the mystery.

I receive requests all the time for tips on creating various sorts of bubble and crystal ball effects in Adobe Photoshop. And there's never really any one simple answer to this: Too much depends on the background image, the shape of the bubble and the lighting of the scene. But I can provide some basic tips for getting started, which you can then extrapolate to suit your particular needs.
Plug-in for Maya delivers amazing results
While I was working for Square in Honolulu on the film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, there was one piece of technology that I was in awe of: the cloth simulator we used. It was an amazing system, and those who worked with it could weave magic. About a year and half after I left Square I had heard a rumor that the developers of Square’s cloth system were going to be releasing a commercial cloth simulator called Syflex. My first thought was, would it be as robust and powerful as the one I had seen in operation during the film’s production?
