![]() Installing and configuring the 16-bit image editor on your Mac Today, friends, we're going to dip our little tootsies into the shallow end of the Unix pool and learn how to install Film Gimp and run it under Apple's new X11. Sound scary? It is. But, in the end, you'll have a 16-bit image manipulation program running in a relatively fast, friendly, Aqua environment right alongside your regular Mac OS X applications. All for free! Apple's realities versus expectations With Steve Jobs's annual keynote address out of the way, it's pretty safe to say that the major announcements coming out of the Macworld SF 2003 conference have now been made. Not that I can take the rest of the week off or anything, but you know what I mean. The "big news"--the stuff we've been waiting to hear for the last few months--has been made. And it's now time to compare Apple's offerings against expectations.
![]() 30 smooth and rough stone surfaces For our first weekly download of the new year--that being 2003, for those of you living in the distant future--we have a collection of 30 texture files for use in a variety of applications. They all fall roughly into the category of rock or stone surfaces, though I defy you to put a name to any one of them in particular. At any rate, they're pretty (for the most part) and should come in handy for surfacing, backgrounds or bump or displacement maps. Custom Gradient Wipe for After Effects After Effects typically isn’t used to edit transitions, yet the program has some simple transitions built in. While you may not use the After Effects transitions as a transition between video clips, you may discover other uses for these effects; especially the Gradient Wipe. ![]() Using layer groups to reveal hidden content My headline on this article is a little misleading. We're not actually going to create a magnifying glass effect in Photoshop, but rather fudge one. What's the difference? Well, if Adobe Photoshop were perfect, I'd be showing you how actually to magnify a portion of a layer interactively, as is possible with a program like Adobe LiveMotion. Instead, I'm going to show you how to make it look like you're doing this without actually doing it. We are working on on adding new leaders to the DMN Forum's host panel to help champion our forums.
