Next-generation page layout software drops Mac OS 9 support, moves to Mac OS X
Earlier today we reported that Quark had begun previewing the next generation of its flagship page layout application, QuarkXPress 6. As reported, QuarkXPress 6 will support Mac OS X, and it will also receive other workflow and feature enhancements. But the company has since provided us with further details on the software and plans for QuarkXPress 5.x.
Warp and distortion effects plugin for Adobe Photoshop
People ask me all the time, "Dave, how can I distort my image in Photoshop with curvy warp effects? That 'Liquify' thingy is nice, but I need more control over the warps--kind of like what you can do in Illustrator." I answer, "You mean envelope distortions?" They say, "No, warpy things where you make one thing fit into another shape." I say, "Listen, you, that's called an envelope distortion. No, you can't." But actually you can with a little plugin from Human Software called Squizz 4 Pro.

Distress brushes for aged photographic effects
This week we present yet another new series of brushes for Adobe Photoshop 7. This time, rather than focusing on painterly or design brushes, we're moving into the area of effects, specifically for creating a distressed--or aged--look on photographs.

When I was young, I wanted more than anything to become some kind of artist when I grew up. Painter, sculptor, filmmaker, writer, musician: It didn't matter, as long as I could be involved somehow with the creative process. But there was a problem with this dream, in that it conflicted with another one of my ambitions: to become a wealthy and powerful tyrant capable of destroying lives and stifling the creativity of others, while somehow also acting as a shill for corporations and government. But how could I mesh these seemingly conflicting goals?
