Using Photoshop's built-in tools to create light rays
It's been quite a while since we've examined lighting effects in Adobe Photoshop 7. When last we left off, we were looking at ways of compositing reflected light onto indoor scenes. Now, as we pick it up, we move outdoors for a look at ways to create light rays and other sky lighting effects using only the built-in tools available in Photoshop.
Raster image vectorization plugin for Adobe Illustrator
Adobe, Macromedia, Corel, Creature House and probably a half dozen other software developers offer software that, in one way or another, takes scanned images and converts them into editable, resolution-independent vector images. There's nothing new to the concept. And, for that matter, there's not a whole lot that's new about the ways in which this process happens or the quality of the results it produces. What is new though--or relatively so--is the concept of adding this functionality to Adobe Illustrator in the form of an easy to use plugin.

30 MultiPen and displacement presets
As you've probably been able to tell, I've been obsessing a bit of late on paint effects that involve multiple brushes. Regardless of the program, multiple brush strokes add depth and texture to any art project, particularly when combined with an input device like a tablet that allows you to control the flow of the multiple strokes interactively. They can be used as backgrounds, as standalone objects within a composition or even as special effects, such as some of the presets included in this, our twentieth straight weekly download.
Version 7.5b gains enhanced scripting, Linux renderer
NewTek today released an update to LightWave 7.5, the company's 3D modeling and animation package. The new version, 7.5b, offers enhanced scripting and includes a new Linux network renderer. It's available now as a free update to registered users of LightWave 7.5.
Version 8.1 gains new particle effects, render improvements
Maxon today released an update to Cinema 4D R8, the company's flagship 3D modeling and animation package. The new R8.1 release includes maintenance fixes, as well as new effects and improvements to the Advanced Render module. It's available now for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows.
