![]() 15 decorative meshes and grids I receive requests all the time from Photoshop users who want to be able to use grids as part of their compositions. This, of course, is a huge pain, at least if you want grids that can be resized, warped and colored and that still look good after doing these things to them. And so, for this week's download, I offer you a set of custom shapes for Adobe Photoshop 7 that includes vector-based grids, as well as some pre-warped shapes that you can use for decorative effects. ![]() Creating additional button presets for your repertoire Just last week we took our first look into button customization for iDVD 3. It's not a terribly difficult process, but, as with this week's tip, it's not entirely obvious unless you want to spend all of your free time hunting around the guts of an application looking for all the little pieces that make customization possible. Kind of like what I do. Hmm. Can we trade lives?
Software efficiency in hardware benchmarks Let's face it: Software development, for the most part, isn't all that it can be. Recently Adobe inadvertently underscored this problem when it posted an article on its site (using data taken from benchmark studies conducted by DMN's own Charlie White), showing how a single-processor 3.06 GHz Dell Precision Workstation dramatically outperformed a similarly equipped dual-processor 1.25 GHz Macintosh G4 at rendering compositions in After Effects 5.5. So what's the problem? Software that isn't written to take advantage of the hardware. That's a big problem. Redesigned 3D software offers new real-time displays, Mac OS X support Eovia today released Amapi Designer 7, a fully revamped version of the company's 3D modeling and animation package. It's available now (slightly earlier than previously announced) for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows. ![]() Macromedia’s Director MX Like Rodney Dangerfield, Director doesn’t get much respect. It’s still one of the most powerful and versatile multimedia development packages available, yet its capabilities have been overshadowed by Flash. As multimedia content has shifted to the Internet, developers have shown a preference for Flash’s more efficient handling of vector graphics and its smaller browser plug-in. That could change as more computer users sign up for broadband and Web developers rediscover the media-rich power of Shockwave (Director’s browser plug-in).
