What can I write about Apple's 17-inch PowerBook G4 that isn't already immediately obvious to anybody who looks at it? There's a reason notebook computers account for 42 percent of Apple's sales and a reason this model, in particular, has fueled these sales. It's beautiful, to be sure. But it also stands out for its big, bright display; its functionality; its wide range of interconnects; and, in the portable market, its performance, where Motorola G4 chips easily hold their own against similarly equipped Intel-based notebooks.
Rasterizing layer effects and cleaning up the leftovers
This week in our series of quick tips on Adobe Photoshop 7, we look at how to rasterize layer effects. Why? Well, for one thing, you might want to bring your composition into another application that doesn't support Photoshop layer effects, such as many nonlinear editing, compositing and motion graphics applications. For another, you might need to generate an alpha channel that takes into account a layer's style effects, such as a drop shadow or outer glow. Whatever the reason, here's a quick way to do it.

New version gains enhanced rendering, animation, modeling, workflow
Alias|Wavefront has released Maya 5, a new version that the company introduced earlier this month at the NAB convention in Las Vegas. Both Maya 5 Complete and Maya 5 Unlimited are available as of now for those on full annual maintenance. New and upgrading customers will be able to purchase the new version May 1.
Animating still photos in After Effects
A trend that is appearing more in more commercials and other video productions is taking a traditional photograph and giving it depth – creating a 2 ½D image. In this Adobe After Effects tutorial, I’ll outline the process and show you how you can do it as well.
