Special effects application and plugin for Adobe Photoshop
Mystical Lighting is the first graphics package I've reviewed from Auto FX, and I'm hooked. Mystical Lighting is a standalone application that also functions through a plugin interface with Adobe Photoshop. As its name suggests, the software is designed to produce lighting effects, as well as effects with a "mystical" quality--ethereal fog, vortices, fairy dust and the like. There are also some utilitarian effects, such as edge highlighting, shading and light casting.
25 surface texture and emboss effects
Aside from rotoscoping and painting, Synthetik Studio Artist also offers a wide range of filter-style effects, similar to plugins you might find in programs like Adobe Photoshop. But unlike Photoshop, Studio Artist provides a basic foundation for building effects from a number of parameters known as Image Operations, which you can then save out as plugins. This week's free download is a collection of 25 such effects that I've put together.

Multimedia control surface, shuttle/jog controller
Contour Design was one of the first peripheral makers to recognize the impending popularity of desktop video production and merge professional-level hardware into the consumer price range. This was a few years back when the company introduced its ShuttlePro control surface, a USB-based multimedia controller and shuttle/jog, just about the only affordable device of its kind on the market at the time.
Working with drop zones
In previous installments in this series, we've looked at various ways to customize buttons for your iDVD presentations. Now we'll go in a bit deeper and take a look at customizing "drop zones," which, in iDVD 3, are large areas in the DVD interface where you can place motion files and create motion overlays and masks.
