QuarkXPress 6 To Ship Next Week
Next major release supports Mac OS X

Quark Inc. today announced that QuarkXPress 6 for Mac OS X will ship next week. This will be the first release of the company's flagship page layout application to support Mac OS X, and the first not to support the classic Macintosh operating system. It will also be available for Windows 2000 and XP.

3D plant creation for Adobe Photoshop

So you need to composite some greenery into an image. Maybe you need to dummy some trees into an architectural rendering. Maybe you need to pretty up a nature scene for an advertising layout. Whatever the reason, you're looking forward to some tedious work ahead: finding the right tree in the right lighting conditions to shoot and then masking out the image; modeling a tree in a 3D application and then, through trial and error, trying to get it to look right in your composition; or even spending the time drawing the tree by hand. But for those of you who'd prefer another way, Digital Element has developed Verdant, a plugin that allows you to generate 3D foliage directly within Adobe Photoshop.

A quick fix for the memory error in Mac OS X

Macromedia Freehand MX, as I wrote in my initial review of the product, is a fantastic upgrade for those who work with vector graphics. It has a great, new workflow and several new creative tools. But it also comes with its own set of new problems--nagging little issues that have not, to date, been addressed with a patch to correct what seem to be some fairly simple bugs. So we'll fix one of these ourselves today.

This week we head into a new area in our ongoing series of weekly downloads: border effects for Adobe Photoshop. There are, of course, limitless possibilities for these sorts of effects, and I intend to produce many more complex effects in future installments in this series. This week we start off with 18 fairly simple effects for producing ragged edges, soft vignettes and other effects, all of which are editable, so you can modify them to your liking.

iShell 3 In Depth and iShell 3 Illustrated

While Tribeworks' iShell 3 is a pretty gawrsh-durned excellent multimedia authoring program, chances are that you're not going to be able to head on down to your local Mega-Giganto Book Emporium And International House of Double-Caffeinated-Half-Caff-Lattes and find any supplemental iShell training books. At the same time, said establishment probably has devoted more square footage than most of us live in just to books on Director alone. However, author Jan Costenbader of Electric Tours has stepped up to provide two iShell resources that could very well be all the extra iShell reference most of us may ever need.
