![]() Creating editable, object-independent masks Sometimes I just get so pleased with myself. Take now, for example. I've been pondering the question of gradient masks in Photoshop for quite some time. There have always been ways to create them, to be sure. But my concern is always with editability: How, in other words, would I create a gradient mask that would be fully editable and work for any layer I'd care to apply it to without any tweaking whatsoever? Shuck my bones if I haven't found an answer. ![]() Creating wet edge effects in Macromedia Freehand MX Did you ever think you'd see the day when the word "painterly" could be applied to a vector graphics program? I didn't. For the longest time I thought illustration apps were good for nothing more than creating Patrick Nagel knockoffs and PeeChee™ notebook-style graphics. And I was completely right, if a little snotty about the whole thing. But the latest generation of applications from Macromedia, Creature House and Adobe have introduced creative tools that finally make it possible to draw outside the lines (or paths or polygons or Bezigons) while maintaining the advantages of vector-based graphics applications--editability and resolution independence. ![]() 15 splatter and displacement effects Synthetik Studio Artist 2.0 has the capability to generate a wide range of paint effects with its built-in paint synthesizer, including brushes that not only apply paint and texture to the canvas, but that also flow like liquids, spreading out and blending and displacing the paint that's already on the canvas. This week we offer variations on this liquid brush feature in the form of 15 Paint Patch presets designed to smear, blend and and otherwise distort your image. Read on for download and installation instructions. ![]() Border and edge effects for Adobe Photoshop Frame and border creation tools are nothing new for graphic designers. They come in all varieties, from edge effects to mattes to simple overlays of photographically produced frames. Many of these are easy enough to produce yourself, assuming you have a lot of time on your hands and don't need to produce them very often. But for those who need high-quality borders and want to save some time, a plugin package like Extensis PhotoFrame 2.5 is the way to go. Displacing a superhero logo Doing your own superhero movie? How the heck do we “Normals” summon our heroes in the time of need? Batman used the Bat Signal. In this Adobe After Effects Pro exercise, we’ll create our own Bat Signal reflecting off the clouds.
