![]() Pairing Maya with Photoshop for quick texture editing New to Maya and trying to work out how to integrate into your traditional workflow? I've designed this tutorial to give new Maya users a chance to use common tools and features like hypershade and textures so they can become accustomed to how to move around with Maya. This tutorial is especially good for print and Web artists who are responsible for enhancing photos or pulling together ads with no photography to use. The experience of creating frosting with a photographic quality in this tutorial can be applied to hundreds of everyday design projects. ![]() Color picker and color scheme extension for Mac OS X From the middle of the twentieth century onward, the RYB wheel has provided artists and designers with a fundamental model for working with color. I'm referring not just to a model for mixing pigments, but also for developing color schemes based largely on the theories of one-time Bauhaus professor Johannes Itten. (Whether you recognize the name or not, he's responsible for many notions you might have about what constitutes appropriate color schemes for your designs.) But virtually every piece of software available to designers today uses native RGB color processing. So what's a designer to do? Well, while you can't mix colors in RYB on screen in most programs, you can still design using the now-classic RYB color model with a variety of tools, including a relative newcomer called Painter's Picker from Old Jewel Software. ![]() Vector illustration software Adobe Illustrator is such a mature product and has been so fixed in its ways for so long that I never expected Adobe to take it any further than it's already been. The last time I reviewed a major upgrade of the software (version 10), I explicitly told you that the most you could expect out of future updates would be improvements under the hood--tweaks to the workflow, improvements to existing features, etc. But I was wrong, and Illustrator CS has shown me just how much a mature application can still grow. Suite offers compositing, animation and painting Bauhaus Software has released the preview version of Mirage 1.0 for Mac OS X. Mirage is an integrated paint, compositing and animation suite, released in its full version last month for Windows. The Mac OS X version is available now in pre-release form. Update to gain Panther support, performance enhancements Quark Inc. says it's planning to release an update to QuarkXPress 6 in the near future. The new 6.1 release will gain support for Mac OS X 10.3, as well as performance enhancements. No ship date has been announced yet, but Quark says the new version will support Mac OS X and Windows.
