![]() Part 1: Extrusion & Bevel basics We've taken a brief look at the 3D capabilities in Adobe Illustrator CS, and now it's time to go deeper and explore some of the new application's creative possibilities. So this week we're launching a new series exploring all of the details of Illustrator's new 3D tools. We kick off the series today with a look at extrusion and bevel techniques, including surface mapping and other options available for fine-tuning the look of your 3D object, including a preliminary overview of the basics of 3D in Illustrator CS. ![]() 25 wet and dry bristle brushes Following a brief interlude, we return to our series of free downloads this week with a new collection of Paint Patches for Synthetik Studio Artist 2. In the past we've explored some of Studio Artist's more experimental capabilities, but this time around the focus of our collection returns to the fundamentals: brushes made to emulate the look and, in some cases, the dynamics of wet paints. Read on for examples and download an installation instructions. ![]() Photographic and effects filters for Adobe Photoshop We've reviewed a few of Digital Film Tools' plugins for Adobe Photoshop in the past, all of which have been solid examples of photographic effects filters. But the company's latest suite, 55MM 3.0, simply dwarfs all of them. It includes not only improved version of the filters in 55MM 2.0, but also several new ones, plus two plugins that were previously only available separately--Light! and Ozone--both of which were fine plugins in their own right. ![]() Two methods for applying Photoshop filters to After Effects sequences It used to be easy to copy your Photoshop filters into your After Effects plugins folder in order to use them on your animations. But with the new versions of Photoshop filters and After Effects 6, it's not an effective solution. Fortunately, After Effects 6 maintains an old trick that works just fine: the ability to export your animations so that you can work on them in Photoshop. ![]() Creating an inlaid metallic effect in Photoshop 7 and CS We've covered a number of graphic effects in Adobe Photoshop, but most of them are destructive to your original artwork. This week we go back to some Photoshop basics to explore Layer Styles for the creation of a metallic, molten inlaid effects. Why? Well, Layer Effects are non-destructive, so you can apply them to text, for example, without having to rasterize. And you can save your styles to create your own variations that you can easily recall later. We are working on on adding new leaders to the DMN Forum's host panel to help champion our forums.
